The archetype of the schism in Old Russian literature

This article aims to identify the origins of the Russian literary-philosophical thought in the Old Rus. In the ancient verbal creativity for the first time began to emerge – through the narrative, story structure, genre specific models, etc. – a set of cultural constants: the archetypes that would later form the basis of the Russian philosophical and artistic thought in the centuries of its development. The article focuses at the formation of one of the main archetypes of the Russian literature – the Split. This archetype, which then determines the movement of Russian literature for centuries, is regarded by the analysis of such prominent works by the ancient authors as Sermon on Law and Grace by Hilarion, The Song of Igor’s Campaign, The Life by the Archpriest Avvakum, etc.

The World Upside Down. Transgressive Elements in Ingrid Beatrice Coman’s novel Per chi crescono le rose

The article aims to read Ingrid Beatrice Coman’s Per chi crescono le rose through the category of transgression. The action is set in communist Romania, where the characteristic political factors cause a number of transgressive behaviors. The argument has been divided into four parts. The first section defines transgression and presents a few theories that are used in the analysis. The remaining parts depict mainly the unusual relationships that bind the characters and show the social restrictions that these relationships break. The narrative technique employed in the novel can also be considered transgressive. Coman’s plot is transgeneric as it relates to the poetics of a historical novel, a social novel and a satirical novel. Trangressiveness is, therefore, visible both on the level of the plot and the form.

Transcultural sences of Kurban Said’s bestseller Ali and Nino

It is for the first time that bestseller Ali and Nino by Kurban Said is under study especially in the focus of the burning discussions about its authorship, time and place of its creating, which have taken place since its publication (1937, Vienna). The various cultural and historical reasons for its publications as well as the place of this novel among other antifascist works of the 1930-1940-ies are considered here. The modernity’s specificity of the work with its definite inclination from prototypical relations with The Cold Kiss by Y. Chemenzeminli as well as from the traditions of the «love story» concept, stemmed from Leyli and Medgnun by Nizami, is under study in the thesis. Historical trauma in Yuri Kuznetsov’s poem The Glasses of Sachsenhausen

Тhe aim of this paper is to present the traumatic experiences of a Russian poet of the second half of the 20th century Yury Kuznetsov. The thesis presents a transmission from personal to common. As personal we understand the family trauma of the poet, the loss of his father during the war. Common is formed on the basics of mythologisation of war and actualization of ontological problem of the place of the lyrical subject in the postwar world (a human being or a myth). The biography of the author has a great significance for the understanding of the poem The Glasses of Sachsenhausen. It preconditions the creation of an image of the former prisoner of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp as a individual of the old, bygone reality, who should adapt to the new world, in spite of his traumatic experiences. The paper exposes the significance of an individual, who is a symbol of the change of epochs and the new way of thinking.

The conflict between woman’s desire for autonomy and her internalization of society’s conservative values in May Sinclair’s The Three Sisters

To be a woman in the Edwardian age, was to live a double life, one that was alternately Victorian and modern, repressive and liberating, traditional and radically new. In The Three Sisters Sinclair represented the self-division that can arise from living in a time of transition as the conflict between a character’s expressed desire for autonomy and agency, and her internalization of society’s conservative values. The novel is both a dramatization of subconscious drives and a novel of ideas that exposes the tyranny of the family and of religion. Gwenda, Mary and Alice are all in love with the village doctor, Steven Rowcliffe. The eldest sister, Mary, is the archetypal Angel in the House. Of all the three sisters, she is the most obedient to her father, pious, and devoted to making the lives of others comfortable. Through Mary, Sinclair demonstrated that the conventional view of wifehood as the only respectable role for woman, robs her of her integrity by driving her to deceptions and schemes to win a husband. Gwenda is aware of her feelings and can also act with intelligence and moral will. When she is told that Alice has become dangerously ill from unrequited love for Steven and she must either marry or go mad, she feels strong enough to sacrifice Steven. Alice’s illness is hysterical and it turns out that it is not Steven himself, but sexual pleasure, that she craves: sex and then marriage and children with local farmer Jim quickly put her right. Unlike Mary and Alice, who act on their drives without a clear knowledge of what they are doing, Gwenda is the least driven. She is a typical Edwardian heroine in several ways. She is independent, physically strong, the most intelligent of the three sisters and the most perspective. But rather than allow this modern woman to rebel, Sinclair uses her to examine the difficulty of maintaining one’s independence and the personal price one must pay when one rejects the status quo. Sinclair shows how even when one rejects the patriarchy intellectually, one can still internalize and suffer from its system of values. First, in the interests of Alice’s health, then in order to nurse her father, Gwenda denies herself and succumbs to the Victorian ideal of feminine self-sacrifice and sexual repression.

At the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries especially the problem of the relationship between East and West, which, according to A. Under such circumstances, universal personalities, like the most famous Kazakh of Korea, a world-famous writer Anatoly Kim, born in the land of Kazakhstan, brought up in Russian culture, and who in recent years has turned completely to his national Roots. Korean culture in general is most suited to the role of mediator between the eastern and western peoples, as in its history closely intertwined shamanism, Buddhist and Christian mythology, Confucianism. A Korean with Kazakh roots A. Kim is experimenting all the time trying to unite the West and East, heaven and earth, nomads and farmers: “On the father (heaven, top), the west and the east are the same, only in the womb of the mothers (bottom, land) are different”. But his experiments are not crowned with success, thereby manifesting the imperfect course of history and an endless return to the beginning, the myth of the first creation.

Сompressed nominal monopredicative structures with syntactical synonymy on the level of syntagm and utterance
(on the material of modern French fiction)

This paper is dedicated to the studies of compressed nominal monopredicative structures with syntactical synonymy on the level of syntagm and utterance as co(n)textually pertinent discourse innovations. Synonymic structures are analyzed as systemic (language) phenomenologically reconstructed one basic (with one transformational terminal chain) and two basic (with two and more transformational terminal chains) propositions and syntagms that are actualized in form of synonymic preferential options. One kind of these constructions is reduced (compressed) monopredicative utterances with nominal key lexeme. By linguistic experiment (language game of addressee) and the method of backward reconstruction the transforms of virtual (language) synonymic series of analyzed constructions are distinguished and the degree of co(n)textual pertinence of potential preferential structures and actualized synonymic options is defined with consideration of author’s idiostyle and his communicative intention. As the result the co(n)textual pertinence of actualized syntactical transform is confirmed.

Peculiarities of transmission of Spanish toponyms in Russian literature

The article deals with peculiarities of transmission of Spanish toponyms in Russian literature. As the title implies the article describes different types of transmission of proper nouns, such as transcription, transliteration and the use of auxiliary language (for example, French or German). Much attention is giving to specific cross-cultural function of toponyms in translation as a specific linguistic unit which has a special component that is clear to representatives of only one or more language communities, usually grouped geographically. Also there is complexity and diversity of the concept of “translation of proper names”, which is not completely accurate with respect to linguistic units of a similar level. The difference between the terms translation and transmission should be stressed because toponym describes some specific place of one linguistic community and can’t be translated in other. Data are given about adaptation of Spanish toponyms in texts of Russian literature of different centuries and recommendation are given for more optimal transmission.

A usage-based approach as a new horizon in loanword studies

It can be observed that cognitive sociolinguistics is an emerging field of linguistics, being a union of cognitive linguistics and sociolinguistics, which sheds different light on the notion of language variation. The paper aims at discussing a socio-cognitively oriented, usage-based approach as a new horizon in studies on lexical borrowings, also referred to as loanwords. The loans have been addressed, first of all, from the perspective of historical and structural linguistics so far. The overview of the research in question shows that there are only few (recent) works discussing lexical borrowings from the mentioned functional perspective. As has been noticed, according to the usage-based account, language changes due to speakers’ actions. To be precise, it undergoes modifications compliant with the way people use it. In this respect, loanwords are treated as linguistic changes/innovations which are propagated within a given community and become new conventions. In general, the usage-based approach focuses on an analysis of authentic examples of loanwords in context and a socio-cognitive reference, e.g. person- and community-based entrenchment, which has not been done by the prior research. Moreover, it has been observed that cognitive sociolinguistics and contact linguistics have certain points of contact as one can even speak of cognitive contact linguistics.

The commentary genre at the 2014 European elections – an analysis of different newspaper categories from Germany and Luxembourg

The European elections held on 25 May, 2014 were the first general elections to the European Parliament after the Treaty of Lisbon, which stipulated in particular that the European Parliament should be given new powers in the election of the President of the European Commission; thus the European Parliament was gaining new power. For the first time, various parties represented in the European Parliament have seized the opportunity and named common European candidates. This new importance made the newspapers to comment on the elections. Publications from Luxembourg and Germany were of particular interest, as the common candidates came from these countries. The corpus derives from the day after the elections (Monday 26 May 2014).
The result: At the level of content, the conservative newspapers have been commenting on the European elections almost exclusively from the national perspective and with regard to the national power policy. On the other hand, we find another correlation with respect to the persuasion styles. Quality magazines tend to comment in an informative style; in the case of yellow press papers, the comments more judging.
